Mexican food is so full of color, life and music. It’s like a piñata exploding in your mouth. ~ Kate McLennan
It Doesn’t Get Any Better
Mexican is my all-time favorite food. I don’t know anyone who does not like Mexican food. But, there are so many Mexican restaurants that it can be a daunting task to choose one. To add to the decision-making process, I’d prefer it to be authentic Mexican cuisine. When a recent occasion took us to St. Augustine, we crossed upon one of the best Mexican restaurants ever – La Cocina Mexican Restaurant.
The Environment also Counts
La Cocina Mexican Restaurant caught our attention with its brightly lit, decorated open terrace. It is a standalone building with its facade resembling that of an old house. They divided its interior into different dining rooms. I particularly liked the decoration, which was in tune with the Mexican culture with its colorfully painted murals of Frida, Cantinflas, and such. Sombreros and clay vases adorn the wooden shelves throughout and ceramic top tables with an array of chairs and Mariachi music playing in the background transports you to the small towns in Mexico.
Kindness Goes a Long Way
It was too cold to sit at the terrace, therefore we ventured inside. As we walked into the restaurant, a staff member politely addressed us. No waiting is necessary as the restaurant has plenty of seating space. On the server’s recommendation, we chose Margarita’s. His recommendations were spot on. It was a very good Margarita and quite a lovely presentation. Throughout the night, the server engaged in small talk with us. The service was prompt and pleasant.
Appetizers
The server brought a dish of warm homemade chips and fresh salsa. As an appetizer, we ordered a ceviche. I must confess it was the best ceviche I have ever had. Fresh seafood nicely plated and covered in a cilantro lime marinade—delicious. Also, their salsa was fresh and tasty, therefore we ordered an extra side to go.
Dinner for Two
For dinner, we chose the flambeed fajita dish. Perfectly seasoned tender steak, chicken, and shrimps covered with green and red peppers, and onions drizzled with tequila and flambeed at tableside. The dish included a side of Mexican rice, refried beans, guacamole, lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream, and our choice of corn or flour tortillas. An amazing dish which I recommend you try.
Affordability at its best
Running a little less than $40 for a dinner meal for two, including drinks and appetizers is a great deal. It was a generous portion but a bit too much for one person, therefore we shared our meal.
My Thoughts
Sometimes it’s impossible to get any more food in, therefore, we opted to skip dessert. We truly enjoyed our meal. We will definitely eat here again. Therefore, if you’re in town and looking for a place to eat, I highly recommend La Cocina Mexican Restaurant at 3290 US-1 in St. Augustine. So tell me, what’s your favorite Mexican restaurant?
