“Keep traveling even if you don’t know where the road will end.” ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Our Trip was Canceled
It’s officially done. The airline has canceled our 2020 trip. Even though I knew it would happen I still had a bit of hope that traveling to Europe would be possible this year. It was a trip planned back in January of this year before Coronavirus went on a rampage spread. And I understand the overall concern and why it had to be canceled. Hopefully, we can reschedule in 2021. And, depending on fare rates, we might do more than one trip.
Our First Stop Was Andorra
This trip was to include several countries in 15 days beginning in Paris, France. Our itinerary included traveling from Paris through the Pyrenees mountains towards Andorra. It is about a 9-hour road trip, roughly 536 miles, and that is not counting the times we will stop to eat and rest. It is a long drive, but cruising through its mountain pastures and valleys and enjoying the site of wildlife will make it an amazing experience. We have never visited Andorra, La Vella, so this stop will definitely be one of my favorites.
We Could Not Leave Out Barcelona
We destined our next stop to be Barcelona, Spain. It will take about 3 hours and nearly 136 miles to reach our destination. We have visited Barcelona before, but there’s so much to explore. Plus, we want to take a sneak peek at the progress of “Basilica La Sagrada Familia,” which left us stunned at its beauty and magnificent structure back in 2015. How much farther have they gotten since then?
Montpellier Awaits for Us
Continuing on this journey, our next destination was Montpellier, France, which would be about 215 miles and almost 3.5 hours. We can make a few rest stops along the way like in Girona, Perpignan, Narbonne, and Pezenas, or just one–whichever our hearts wish to do. Other than Paris, we have not been to any other part of France, so it’ll be interesting to explore another city.
Dare We Visit Monaco?
From Montpellier, we will drive towards Monaco, which is about 217 miles and a little under 4 hours to arrive. Monaco is a sovereign city on the French Riviera. It is known as the place for the wealthy, or as “Billionaires Playground,” as I heard. It is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. It is a small city, so our time there will suffice.
City of Fashion and Design
We could not continue our journey without stopping in Italy—one of my favorite places in the world. Having already visited Italy a few times, we made our next stop in a city we had not visited before, and that is the fashion and design city of Milan. It will take us more or less 4 hours and a drive of about 248 miles. There are many things to see and do in Milan, like Milan Cathedral, Torre Branca, Santa Maria delle Grazie, Piazza Dei Mercanti, La Scala, Naviglio Grande, and so much more. We just need to figure out what we can fit in our limited time.
First Time in Switzerland
Wow, so much traveling has made me tired. But we must continue to one more country, which we have not visited before, and that is Switzerland. Another 4-hour trip (more or less) and 217 miles and we will reach Geneva. We won’t be in Geneva for long, but it’ll be enough to explore the Old Town. I’m sure we will have a great time there.
Back to Paris Where it all Began
Our journey will conclude with an approximately 5.5-hour drive to our last destination in Paris. We will spend a couple of days here before returning home from one of the greatest trips we’ve done.
Time to Re-book Awaits
We were really looking forward to this trip in late October. It doesn’t mean we will not complete it. It will just not be within our chosen time-frame, but in 2021. I won’t despair and just wait patiently for the green light. Once we get the green light, then we can re-book all the hotels and flights. I do hope prices do not skyrocket. Hopefully, they’ll be low enough to entice travelers to book their trips. I’m so glad we got travel insurance. I’m sure many travelers are in the same boat as us. So, my fellow travelers, where did you miss going this year?

It’s a great plan, but a lot of driving, it’s going to eat all the time. Each portion of the trip is a journey in itself and offers enough to discover to occupy a full stay.

All have either a minimum of a 1-day stay. Places we’ve been to before are the ones with the least amount of days. We’ve done trips like this before and enjoy them very much.

Our planned trip to many of those places (Andorra, Pyrenees, & Barcelona) was also cancelled. We have tentative plans to go in summer of 2021, but the way things are going with COVID, we are also making back-up plans for a US road trip. It might be 2022 by the time Spain and France let Americans in.

We planned an itinerary for a US road trip but it would have blown the budget. So we opted for a small trip to Puerto Rico.

Great article! Sorry that the pandemic denied you the opportunity to go on this amazing trip. I’ve always wanted to go to both Geneva and Paris! I hope you’ll have another opportunity to go soon.
